For around two years of my gaming life I was obsessed with Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty. I got decent at it too, hovering around Platinum League with occasional forays into Diamond – the Koreans were hardly quaking in their boots, but I could hold my own at a reasonable level. More importantly I loved Starcraft 2.
I watched it all the time, followed the tournaments and the Korean GSL, and studied the strategies of players I especially admired. After a while I moved onto other things, then ‘s Heart of the Swarm pulled me right back in – new units being the most obvious draw, but the shaking up of a tired metagame being the real secret sauce. Starcraft 2 showcases what Blizzard is better at than almost every other developer, with perhaps the only comparisons being Valve and more recently Riot.
A Blizzard game does not have a fixed lifespan. If it has problems, real problems, then they will be fixed – as the company tried to do with Diablo 3. If it is growing stale then it will get regular new content, as with WoW. And if it’s intended to be a competitive experience, as with Starcraft 2, then it will be fine-tuned and expanded whenever necessary. While it would be untrue to credit Starcraft 2 for the explosive rise of eSports in recent years, it was timed almost perfectly.
Before streaming and video on demand eSports was the preserve of the dedicated, but Starcraft 2 was released when these technologies were suddenly widespread – and the audience for Brood War meant that Starcraft 2 had the opportunity to take advantage. These days the scene looks very different but, despite the nonsensical catcalls that this is a ‘dead game,’ Starcraft 2 hangs on in there. It has many critics, yet it has even more people who continue to play it.
Parent reviews for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Learn more The best I’ve ever had in a RTS game. The learning curve is great, with a great campaign and tons of single and multiplayer aspects to teach you how to play at a high level quickly. The campaign is great; the choices you make affect the outcome of various characters, there is an ability to buy upgrades for your favourite units and you can unlock achievements, decals and portraits based on the difficulty you play at and the bonus objectives you complete. In summary the campaign makes single player a great experience and the multiplayer online is what will keep you playing the game in a years time.
What else is there to say.
Patch, 15 February, 2v2, 3v3 & 4v4 Matchmaking Improvements. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the long-awaited real time strategy sequel that was displaying.
A traditional RTS essential for anyone interested in competitive strategy games, and highly recommended for anyone who isn’t. StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm was designed to be a competitive sport, so it’s only fair that it nicks some of sport’s idioms. The most important of these is cribbed from football: it’s a game of two halves. The front half: a odd mission campaign with a steadily evolving spread of controllable units spurred on by an earnest, overwrought story of revenge.
Dig through that, learn the game’s many long and greasy ropes, and you’ll find the back half: a competitive strategy game so finely balanced and so tactically varied that people are able to play it as their job. No matter your experience with Heart of the Swarm’s predecessor, Wings of Liberty – first of Blizzard’s planned three StarCraft 2s – it’s the campaign you should start with. Not simply because it does an appreciable job of teaching new players the basic mechanics for one of the game’s three races – the Zerg, the swarmy stars of this StarCraft show – but also because it’s incredibly well put together in its own right.
Heart of the Swarm delivers on its titular promise early on, quickly gifting players with control of masses of units. The Zerg are numberless in the game’s fiction, and this justifies control of a screen-filling carpet of Zerglings a few missions into the campaign. Wolf-sized Zerglings, like many of the Zerg’s units, are cheap, quick to produce, and disposable in application. But in giving me control of such a vast number of them, Heart of the Swarm not only cemented the differences between it and predecessor WoL, it made me feel powerful.
Pointing a host of clawed monsters at a Terran target and watching them chew it into scrap metal and ripped flesh is consistently enjoyable – especially with a physics engine that now ensures torsos and limbs go flying into the distance with appreciable force. At the heart of said swarm sits Kerrigan. She’s the game’s cover star, and comes in two flavours in both HotS and the series fiction.
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Co-Op Review – Page 3
HotS spins an engrossing tale of vengeance and the price one must pay to attain it. The StarCraft II writers still seem to struggle with believable dialogue between humans, leaning too heavily on cheesy one-liners–but the conversations amongst alien races are much more interesting, offering a look at just how the Zerg think. Whereas the Terran battalions in Wings of Liberty built up slowly and methodically, having a mass of larvae at your disposal lets you spawn an army in moments or adapt to changes in the blink of an eye.
This makes missions feel much more streamlined and exciting, letting you continuously churn out units instead of waiting around for your production facilities to pump out soldiers. The other major improvement to the story missions comes in the form of Kerrigan herself, who now acts as an almighty spell-casting hero unit that imbues a sense of continuity into the overall campaign. Taking the time to complete bonus objectives will level Kerrigan up, giving you access to an ever-increasing suite of cool abilities and offering you a satisfying, permanent reward for exploring each mission.
